Technostress Anxiety

We live in a world increasingly dominated by computers. Computers and the internet have brought technology and resources to our fingertips. Not surprisingly, this "jump" in technology has been very overwhelming for some people.

Craig Brod (1984) defined technostress, in his book Technostress: the Human Cost of the Computer Revolution, as "a modern disease of adaptation caused by an inability to cope with the new computer technologies in a healthy manner. It manifests itself in two distinct and related ways: in the struggle to accept computer technology, and in the more specialized form of overidentification with computer technology."

So how does one deal with technostress anxiety? When feeling overwhelmed, I would encourage you to partialize your situation. Take things, one at a time. Try not to think about the big picture, pick one aspect of what you have to do and focus on that.

Slow down. Try not to feel like you are under any kind of pressure. Take your time in making yourself more comfortable with the changing technology.

Take breaks. Don't force yourself to learn everything in one day. Spend time away from the computer, away from the books, etc.

Technology, though overwhelming, can make your life easier believe it or not!
