Below you will find information on: System Family Therapy

System Family Therapy is based on viewing the family, as a family. It is a complex system made up of constantly interacting and dynamic components. The problems and concerns are seen to have occured out of a dysfunction in the family unit as a whole, and must be treated as such.

A family therapist often sees several members of the family at the same time in therapy sessions in order to observe the patterns of interaction that develop among the family members. It is important to look deeply into the family unit, and shy away from focusing too greatly on one aspect (or one member of the family).

Therapy interventions usually focus on these patterns of interaction rather than on analyzing subconscious impulses or early childhood traumas of individuals as a Freudian therapist would do. The therapist is trained to recognize dysfunctions in the family unit, and he or she (after observing) will share this with the family. It is up to the family as a unit to work towards changing and correcting this dysfunction. These changes in the way of responding may then trigger repercussions in the whole system, leading sometimes to a more satisfactory system state.
