Chapter 2
Overview of Cultural Diversity and Mental Health Services
Barriers to the Receipt of Treatment
The underrepresentation in outpatient treatment of racial and ethnic minority
groups appears to be the result of cultural differences as well as financial,
organizational, and diagnostic factors. The service system has not been designed
to respond to the cultural and linguistic needs presented by many racial and
ethnic minorities. What is unresolved are the relative contribution and
significance of each factor for distinct minority groups.
