Schizophrenia - Cause
There are many theories suggesting the cause of schizophrenia, but none have been medically proven. There is considerable evidence suggesting that genetics play a role in the schizophrenia cause. Your risk of developing this disease is 10 times greater if your parent or sibling has this disease. Having a relative with schizophrenia does not mean that you will develop it, many people have it without having any relatives with this condition.
Schizophrenia may also be associated with problems during pregnancy, including exposure to a viral infection or malnutrition. A recent study also suggests that a child is at greater risk if his or her father is above the age of 50 when the child is conceived. Head injuries, also, may lead to schizophrenia as studies have suggested this as well.
There is no known single cause for schizophrenia. Scientists and researchers do not yet understand all of the components necessary to lead to schizophrenia. As medical science continues to improve, hopefully we will come closer to unraveling the mystery that is schizophrenia.
