Music Therapy and Grief and Loss

Welcome to my extensive compilation of therapeutic resources from the web.  I am trying to provide links to resources with additional information on the topics raised in my music and on this website.

Music is an incredibly powerful form of expression.  It combines both words and sound to deliver a message.  Certain songs that one hears on the radio can trigger specific memories in one's mind.

There is no doubt, there is a strong connection between music and our feelings.Through my experiences in therapy, I very quickly realized that people simply do not like to sit down and just begin pouring their hearts out to someone they don't even know.  It was for this reason that I began to draw upon my own experiences, and discovered a very powerful technique that allows me to use music, something people already listen to and identify with, as a way to help people heal.

Here, I am going to look specifically at how music can be used to help those who have experienced loss.  Here are just a few:

Padriac My Prince, by Bright Eyes (Emo/Alternative) :
This very emotional song tells the tale of someone who lost his young baby brother by him drowning in a bathtub.  This song paints a very personal and powerful picture of someone who is really struggling with the loss of someone.  Incredible.

Not All Right by Freudian Slip (Alternative/Rock) :

In this song the artist sings about feeling very sad and depressed.  This song provides a description of someone wishing to dig a hole and crawl in it.  Very powerful.  This song is included in Utilizing Music as a Coping Skill : Featuring the Music of Freudian Slip

Fight, by The Cure (Alternative) :

In this encouraging song, the artist encourages that you fight, fight, fight to overcome the many unfair challenges of life.  This song has provided many with inspiration.
