Prozac Weight Loss / Gain
An unfortunate side effect to Prozac is weight loss (and in a smaller amount of people, weight loss). This does not effect everyone, though Prozac has a reputation as a "weight gain" drug. Weight gain is certainly something that is not desirable, but steps can be taken to combat this. When thinking about whether or not you should take/continue to take Prozac, one must weigh the benefits against the negatives (sure, I'm gaining weight, but I feel so much better about myself). The reality is that taking Prozac might not help you at all. But you do not know this until you try.
Prozac interacts with the body in a way which inadvertly slows down the metabolism. This means that food is absorbed by the body at a slower than normal rate.
To try and cut down on your weight gain, you can try limiting how much you eat, paying attention particularly to fatty foods, exercise regularly, etc. After doing all of this, you may still experience weight gain. This is one of the potential unfortunate side effects of the drug. If you are thinking of stopping taking your prescription, please consult your doctor immediately. One should simply not just stop taking it, this can have negative effects, one needs to be weaned off.
