Prozac and Pregnancy

Deciding whether or not to take Prozac while pregnant is a complex and confusing problem. There have been some (not many, mind you) studies done examining whether or not Prozac is safe

One study found that there were no apparent dangers during the first two trimesters, but there was an increased risk of prematurely born babies. For many expectant mothers, that news is enough for one to stop taking Prozac. The problem with this is that this may bring about an increase in the person's initial symptoms (depression, anxiety, etc.). Studies have also shown that expectant mothers suffering from these illnesses can negatively impact the baby.

What is one to do? One must weigh the risks. Consult your doctor. It may be your maternal instinct to wish to stop Prozac completely. You may feel that taking Prozac does not pose a great risk to the baby, and the risks far outweigh the alternative (going off the medication and relapsing into depression).
