Drug Treatment: Adderall


What is Adderall?


Adderall is a stimulant, which is composed of a mixture of amphetamine salts. It is often used to help reduce or improve the symptoms of ADHD, including having a short attention span and/or being hyperactive and impulsive. Adderall has been successful for some patients where Ritalin has not been.

Dosage


Adderall is approved for children aged 3 and older. As with other standard psychiatric drugs, it is typical to begin taking a low dose of Adderall, which is gradually increased until a suitable dosage is found.
A dosage of Adderall may be any where from 2.5mg to 30mg. The effects of Adderall can be felt after just a few days.

Benefits


Adderall has been helpful in being able to reduce some of the symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in children. Though it is important to combine this drug with other modes of therapy in treatment (the most central of these being behavioral).

Side Effects


Adderall is not known for its side effects, but it can produce anorexia (loss of appetite), emotional lability, difficulty sleeping, weight loss, and depression.
