Beck Depression Inventory
The Beck Depression Inventory is a testing tool which is used to assess the existence and severity of the symptoms of depression, as listed in the DSM-IV (American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). This test also includes questions which assess the symptoms of severe depression, which could require hospitalization. The various but short questions also examine increases and decreases in sleep and apetite, self-perception, weight loss, work difficulty, and more.
Each of the 21 questions are assessed on a 4 point scale. This allows for the further notation of how severe something may be. The dimensions assessed include cognition, somatization, and motivation. The Beck Depression Inventory was initially created to examine the evaluation of treatment produced change in 1961, but since has become a common and valuable tool for the assessment of depression.
